Awards, Ratings & Reviews

93/100 — Falstaff · 2014 Vintage · Tasted: Oct 2016
“Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, breiterer Wasserrand. Zart nach Eukalyptus, ein Hauch von Minze, schwarze Beeren, dezente Edelholzwürze. Mittlerer Körper, rote Kirschen, präsente, tragende Tannine, zarter Nougat im Abgang. Minze im Nachhall, vielseitig einsetzbar, selten so früh zugänglich wie in diesem Jahrgang.”

91/100 — Wine Enthusiast · 2014 Vintage · Tasted: Jan 2017
“This is almost confectionery in its fruit sweetness, layering raspberries over black currants in wave after wave. There's a hint of mint as well, ample weight and power on the palate and a long, dusty, tannic finish. Drink now–2030.”

About This Wine

Penfolds Bin 407 began life in 1993 with the release of the 1990 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon.

Created as a result of the availability of high quality Cabernet fruit, Bin 407 is inspired by Bin 707.

It offers varietal definition, approachability, structure and depth of flavour, while highlighting the Penfolds approach to multi-region, multi-vineyard blending.

The fruit was sourced from McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Coonawarra, Wrattonbully and Barossa Valley.

Dry and warm conditions coupled with lower than average yields resulted in Cabernet with strong structural tannins and wines of great intensity and flavour.

Producer Notes

COLOUR Bright garnet.

NOSE Savoury spices (paprika, curry leaf) with beetroot, blackcurrant conserve and cassis varietal markers. Less noble yet endearing wafts of Mediterranean meat(s)-on-a-spit, and a suggestion of oak/char. Darkened tarry and bitumen aromas abound.

PALATE Tight, solid, assertive – handles oak well. Impressive mid-palate adorned with pronounced Cabernet tannins and a refreshing acidity. Reassuring flavours including black olive and pomegranate alongside a fanciful impression of carpaccio slivers of seared venison. A sprinkling of cocoa powder, mocha, shaved bitter chocolate and walnut husk adds further interest.
